Connectino
This project was a collaborative and interactive installation created in partnership with CMD Rotterdam students for our client, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam. Our primary challenge was to engage young people, a target audience that typically shows little interest in modern dance. To bridge this gap, we designed a deeply personal experience centered around the rhythm of their own heartbeat. Using BLE heartbeat sensors, we captured real-time biometric data, transforming it into the core of the installation’s interactive and emotional storytelling. Alongside developing the installation, we imagined a web platform where participants could connect further, getting to know the dancers, exploring heartbeat notes shared by others. The heartbeat data was creatively transformed into a personalized torus knot, symbolizing a unique connection between the participant and a dancer. This knot became a visual representation of their heartbeat. Participants could then “pour their hearts out” by sharing messages inspired by their experience, which would be visible to others on the web platform. This added a layer of emotional engagement, as the platform became a space for reflection and shared connection, amplifying the sense of community within the project. For this project I had to learn about BLE sensors and imagine ways to visualize data. I also had to learn how to work with a team and communicate effectively to bring our ideas to life. Over the 6-week timeline, we collaborated to design, build, and refine an interactive installation that connected participants with modern dance in a completely new way. The project can be found on my GitHub repository.
